Cloud Infrastructures and Data Centers, the “Pact for Environmental Sustainability” arrives

The pandemic has not been able to stop the green wave that swept the whole of Europe and the world in 2019. Just think of all the historic initiatives put in place by the European Commission led by the first female president in its history: Ursula von der Leyen. They called the European Green Deal a revolutionary measure, a “roadmap” to make the Union’s economy sustainable. The aim is to transform climate change issues and environmental challenges into opportunities in all policy areas and make the transition fair and inclusive for all.

The challenges around us

– said President Ursula von der Leyen become more dangerous, stronger, more intense, I think that it is the constructive forces that prevail over the destructive ones and every time there is violence it can only be stopped if dialogue is reopened and this is the strength of the

European Union. the strength of dialogue and the diplomatic force that can focus on de-escalation

.”

The head of the European Commission was right, a year ago she did not even imagine what challenges and pressures the Old Continent would be subjected to. A year after those words, after the pandemic has dealt hard blows in terms of human, economic and social capital, Europe is trying to resist, it bends but does not break.

And from that milestone, after the historic approval of the European Green Deal, the “Pact for Climate Neutrality of Data Centers” or “Climate Neutral Data Center Pact” which brings together the main European players in the Cloud Computing and ICT industry. This agreement provides, among other things, for the achievement of measurable energy efficiency and resource reuse targets for data centers and cloud infrastructures, with the first targets set as early as 2025. Among the objectives of this initiative is the essential one of increasing energy efficiency through measurable targets, the recycling of heat produced, the acquisition of 100% clean energy and the saving of water, which is the most precious resource but also the one most at risk.

For the world of the Cloud, this is a major self-regulatory initiative involving 25 companies and 17 associations, which have set themselves the ambitious goal of making their activities “carbon neutral” by 2030, 20 years ahead of the Commission’s roadmap, which has 2050 as its goal.

It should be noted that Amazon Web Service, the most important player in the industry, with the largest number of data centers in the world, offering over 175 complete data center services globally with 24 regions and 77 availability zones, has not hesitated to give its adhesion to the pact.

Clearly, every step forward, every progress in the direction of a “cleaner” world will be kept under close control by the European Commission itself. Finally, the Vice-President Frans Timmermans welcomed the pact as “A commitment to the community by key players in the data industry. These are – “A first step towards the realization of a smart and environmentally sustainable future

,” he said.
